Robert Doisneau was born in 1922 in Gentilly, a suburb of Paris.
After his little-known youth behind the macrame curtains of a conventional middle-class family, Robert is fifteen years old when he learns engraving and lithography at the Estienne School in Paris and begins to design labels for the packaging of medicines.
He became an assistant cameraman in the studio of André Vigneau in 1931, where he discovers artistic places that will stimulate him. The four years he spent working for the advertising department of the Renault automaker, where he was fired for repeated delays, led him to the attractive position of independent photographer.
The Second World War explodes then, putting an end to its projects. Later, in the postwar Parisian euphoria, despite the fact that he daily deals with the orders to earn a living, he treasures the photos that he will find with great success, stubbornly crossing where “there is nothing to see”, favoring furtive points , small pleasures illuminated by the “reflections of the sun’s rays on the asphalt of the cities”.
When he died in April 1994, he left 450,000 negatives that tell an entertaining story of his time with a tender and observant eye, which should not hide the depth of his thought, his irreverent attitude towards power and authority, his relentless and free thinking mind.
