Mafalda Quotes

It’s hard to believe that the comic we grew up with as Latinos, is turning 50 years today. Mafalda, a comic strip written and drawn by Argentine cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavado, better known by his pen name Quino, was first published on September 29, 1964 in the magazine Primera Plana. The strip features a 6-year-old girl named Mafalda, who reflects the Argentinian middle class and progressive youth, which is concerned about humanity and world peace and rebels against the world bequeathed by their elders.

Mafalda Quotes

It’s hard to believe Mafalda goes 50 years back, because it really gets you thinking. Once you take one of the strips and read it nowadays, the problems and issues addressed seem very current. You would not think that society has not really “improved” that much since the mid-60s, and that we would still be trying to find ways to better the same issues. Mafalda’s importance is based on that. The timelessness of it, the sharp criticism, simple thoughts and clear ideas. To celebrate Quino’s masterpiece, we remember some of Mafalda’s best quotes.
