Strange brainwashing techniques you’ve probably never heard of
One of the worst practices on Earth, brainwashing techniques are meant to change or alter an individual’s thought patterns. These methods are used to introduce new thoughts and to instill a new belief system in a person’s mind.
Brainwashing is a technique used in the reform or alteration of the thought process and beliefs of an individual. The reason or purpose behind a person’s brainwashing is mostly evil or antisocial. The person who performs the brainwashing usually resorts to harassing the victim, both physically and mentally.
Robert Jay Lifton, a psychiatrist from the United States, studied the techniques of brainwashing implemented in the Chinese war camps. These techniques were used to brainwash American prisoners of war (POW). According to him, the brainwashing process involves several techniques that are grouped in different steps mentioned below.
Breaking confidence: this is the first step of brainwashing. It is about breaking a person’s morale and current beliefs through physical and mental torture. The techniques used in the brainwashing process are listed below.
Attack on identity: in this technique, the identity of the person who has been brainwashed is attacked. It creates a dent in the person’s self-esteem. The process can continue from a few days to several months until the person is exhausted, disoriented and loses control over their mind.
Guilt: the victim is constantly humiliated, so he feels guilty for the simple mistakes and beliefs he has. Eventually, a sense of shame develops in the victim’s mind and begins to lose confidence.
Self-betrayal: in this technique, the victim is forced to renounce or denounce their beliefs and also the social system from which they come. Create an identity crisis in the mind of the victim.
Nervous attack: the victim who, for the moment is already completely exhausted and disoriented, could suffer a nervous breakdown. He becomes prone to various psychological disorders.
Possibility of salvation: at this stage, the person performing brainwashing does not have to resort to torture or coercive techniques. He uses the following methods to put the victim under his control.
Clemency: after enduring the harassment for a long time, the victim is shattered, both physically and mentally. At this point in time, the person or agent performing the brainwashing task shows some indulgence towards him. Such a change in behavior is a pleasant shock for the victim.
Confession: The indulgence shown by the agent is a relief for the victim. You can express your gratitude for the kind of treatment that is offered. At that time, the victim is offered the option to confess past mistakes.
Channeling and releasing guilt: the whole process creates a vacuum in the victim’s mind. Now is the time for the agent to fill this void. At this crucial juncture, you have every opportunity to manipulate or control the mind of the victim. All the victim’s past sufferings are attributed to the supposed “wrong” belief system that he followed in the past. Now, the victim is offered the “freedom” to blame his past and not himself for the agony he suffered. It frees you from the imperfections of the past.
Rebuild a new belief system: at this stage, the agent treats the victim in a friendly way. Convince the victim to choose a completely new belief system. At this stage, there is no need to force or force the victim; This is because he is already on his way to believe in a new concept. The agent simply gives a mental ‘push’. The victim then begins to think about the new principles and fundamentals consciously. The fact that it is treated well attracts the victim to new thoughts and ‘teachings’. After the victim is under the agent’s full control, a ritual is performed to “seal” the new belief system in his mind. This ritual, as it binds the victim and forces him to remain loyal to the new world into which he has entered. It can be called a “rebirth” and a new beginning in the life of the victim.
